Raspberry Pi Zero W
Product Code: RKB-00006
Brand: Raspberry Pi (UK)
The Raspberry Pi Zero W is an ultra-cheap single-board computer that’s tiny – only 65mm by 30mm. It has a single core 1GHz processor and 512MB RAM, which should be enough processing power for simple projects. The big improvement over the plain vanilla original Zero board is that it has wireless connectivity built-in, with 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.1. The essential wireless addition makes it particularly well suited for smart home automation, Internet of Things applications and embedded headless servers. It also features a mini HDMI port, micro USB OTG and a 40-pin GPIO header for a wide range of hardware connectivity options in a small, power-efficient physical footprint.

Description
The Raspberry Pi Zero W is an inexpensive, low-energy, single-board computer manufactured by the Raspberry Pi Foundation. It is very small. It is an improved version of the original Raspberry Pi Zero with wireless built-in and still the same small size and low cost and was released in February 2017. The Raspberry Pi Zero W targets the Internet of Things (IoT) applications, embedded systems, robotics, wearable devices, smart home automation, portable electronics, and educational projects. It is suitable for space and power limited applications due to its low weight and power consumption.
The Raspberry Pi Zero W is powered by a Broadcom BCM2835, 1 GHz single-core ARM11 processor, with 512 MB of LPDDR2 SDRAM. It’s not as powerful as the newer Raspberry Pi models, but it’s enough for lightweight computing tasks, interfacing with sensors, automation systems, and network-based applications. It is efficient in programming, data acquisition and communication, and supports Linux based operating systems.
Wireless communication is one of the most important features of the Raspberry Pi Zero W. It supports IEEE 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi (2.4 GHz), and thus the board can connect to wireless networks directly without requiring an external Wi-Fi adapter. It also features Bluetooth 4.1 and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) for communicating with wireless peripherals, smartphones, sensors and other Bluetooth-enabled devices. This is why the Raspberry Pi Zero W with its built-in communication features is the perfect solution for IoT projects and remote monitoring systems.
The board provides a 40-pin General Purpose Input/Output (GPIO) header, which is compatible with the GPIO layout of larger Raspberry Pi boards. GPIO header is not populated by default but users can solder header pins if needed. The GPIO pins support a variety of communication protocols such as I 2 C, SPI, UART, PWM and digital input/output, which makes it easy to interface sensors, relays, LCD displays, motors, LEDs, cameras and other electronic modules.
For multimedia applications the Raspberry Pi Zero W includes a Mini HDMI port that supports 1080p Full HD video output. It also includes a CSI camera connector for connecting the Raspberry Pi Camera Module for image capture, surveillance and computer vision projects. A Micro-USB OTG port can be used to connect to USB peripherals such as keyboards, mice, storage devices and webcams using an OTG adapter, while a separate Micro-USB power port is used to power the board.
The Raspberry Pi Zero W uses a Micro SD card for installing the operating system and for data storage. Works with multiple operating systems including : Raspberry Pi OS, Ubuntu Core, DietPi, Kali Linux and other Linux based distributions. It can be programmed in Python, C, C++, Java, Scratch and Node.js which makes it suitable for beginners, students, researchers and professional developers.
It is powered through a 5V Micro-USB connector and the board typically draws less than 1 W in normal operating conditions. Its low power consumption is ideal for battery powered devices, portable electronics, remote monitoring stations and solar powered applications. Raspberry Pi Zero W is small, but has great flexibility and functionality for many embedded projects.
The Raspberry Pi Zero W is a very small, inexpensive, general purpose computing platform with wireless networking, GPIO expansion, multimedia capabilities and Linux support. This is widely used in IoT systems, home automation, environment monitoring, robotics, smart agriculture, security systems, educational laboratories, and DIY electronics projects. Supported by its large community, rich software ecosystem and ease of programming, it is one of the most popular single board computers for the development of embedded systems and practical engineering applications.
